| GOTLAND - MUNICIPALITY OF GOTLAND |
|

The Swedish island of Gotland has taken the challenge to have a carbon neutral energy supply by 2025 from local renewable energy sources thereby contributing to local development in the most efficient and sustainable manner possible. In other words, Gotland wishes to neutralise its greenhouse gas emissions within the span of one generation.
Gotland is a showcase of a number of interesting and innovative examples of renewable energy initiatives. This should not be surprising as Gotland has the highest sun exposure in Sweden, good access to bio fuels and one of the best wind resources in Europe. These natural assets combined with the municipality's entrepreneurial spirit and focus on strategic environmental planning have contributed to the realisation of many ideas for increased sustainability in the local energy supply on Gotland.
The municipality's operations have reduced CO2 emissions from fossil fuels by almost 50% since 1995. On the island as a whole the local energy supply from renewable energy sources is increasing. Local wind power meets 25% of the island's annual electricity demand. Bio-fuels from local forestry meet the domestic heating needs and from 2010 the first biogas car and bus filling stations are in operation.
