The Samso Municipality, an independent island municipality, set as objective in 1997 to be "the Danish Renewable Energy Island". This meant that the entire island would change its energy supply from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources in only 10 years.  Presently energy production is more than 100% based on renewable energy sources. Though the residents still use gasoline cars and diesel ferries, their consumption is more than offset by the island's exports of green energy.
Samso Energy Academy is a non-governmental organisation managed by a steering committee with the participation of the Mayor of Samso and the representative of the region.  The Academy is running a number of EU projects as well as a school for energy, training courses for municipalities and private sector. Researchers from universities visit and study the island project. It has eight full time employees.
