Gotland 2011 Annual Eco–Day
19/10/2011

On October 19 Region Gotland's largest information event about sustainable development in Gotland was held at Wisby Strand Congress Hall. The ECO day is Region Gotland's annual event for spreading information and knowledge about the sustainable development in Gotland for the inhabitants on Gotland. Every year the ECO day event has a theme and 2011 it was fresh and marine waters in and around Gotland and in the world. The Baltic Sea is affected by some 90 million people around the Sea which is often threatened by oil transports, pesticides and eutrophication.
A very big threat for the Baltic Sea is the rapid increase of oil transports in very large ships right across the Sea to the rest of the world. Therefore information about reduction of the use of fossil fuels is important a day like this. The IslePact information was spread to the public in the information corner in the mingle area through brochures, dialogue and the rollup.

The main speaker this day was the very famous Swedish National Geographic photographer Mattias Klum who was giving two very inspiring lectures with pictures and movies from his adventures in the world. He inspired the audience to act for a sustainable use of water, nature and energy sources to ensure stable eco systems around the world. The event was divided in two seminars one for the Region Gotland´s employees in the afternoon and one in the evening for the public. A total of 1600 persons came to the two events (almost 3 % of the population of Gotland), and around 170 people from the countryside choosed to go to the event with public busses free av charge specially arranged for the evening, to inspire them to try public transportation and leave the car at home.
