Margarita Ramos commended the Canary Islands for hosting this conference which is "a unique environment to learn and act on problems of the island territories", especially on energy dependency. She reaffirmed the "Canary Islands commitment to renewable energies" and expressed support for all initiatives and agreements arising from the Pact of Islands. "Renewable energy sources generate a sustainable economy and are undoubtedly the future," she added.

Nicolas Diaz Chico, CEO of the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), stressed the importance of such events as the one held in Fuerteventura, "where all stakeholders can review energy sector requirements and seek joint solutions for the future."

Representatives from 11 EU island regions attended this International Conference whose purpose was also to promote sustainable energy policies in all EU countries, in accordance with the Written Declaration recently agreed by the European Parliament. During the meeting different issues related to Isle‐Pact initiative were addressed: renewable energy, energy efficiency, CO2 emissions, energy storage, island power grids, electric cars, feed‐in tariffs and other topics of interest.

The representatives of the Pact of Islands signatories included, among others, Cllr Angus Campbell, the leader of the Council of Outer Hebrides, Bertil Klintbom from Gotland, Jose Manuel Melim Mendes from Madeira, Anthi Charalambous from Cyprus and members of the co‐ordination team of the ISLE‐PACT project.
